Hello Mario! To start with, let me congratulate you with the 3rd place at the Samsung European Championship which took place this weekend.
Hello and thank you! It actually was a tough competition and hard way but it paid off. I would like to thank all our sponsors, teammates and my national team, who were supporting me in any way to get there.
What were your first thoughts when you left Austria, were they at least to get top 5? Or did you have other expectations?
My goal was to get under the top 3 at the end and it worked out, thank goodness!
The road from Austria to Germany was kind of short. But when did you leave Austria and how was the trip?
Since we took the bus this time and weren’t flying to Hannover to be a little bit more flexible, it was kind of long for me, 12 hours to be exactly.
How was it when you arrived there? Tell me something about the atmosphere from Cebit…
It was once again a superb event with much spectators and the atmosphere was just awesome like in a real stadium. I am glad each time to be able to play on the stage, because it always motivates me when the crowd is screaming and supporting the players.
In the first match you met Sapp from Estonia… Please explain a bit about the match.
My first opponent was Sapp from Estonia. I expected this match to be quite hard, since I didn’t know him or heard anything about how he plays, so you couldn’t prepare anything. But immediately after I lost the first match, I knew that he is strong, but luckily I managed to get into the match again and took the deserved win home. He is also a quite nice and fair player – we were talking a little bit after the match and he congratulated me and wished me luck for the rest of the tournament.
The Russian FIFA machine “Alexx” was your next opponent … What were his “aces” in the match against you?
Yes, my opponent was Alexx from Russia. In this match quite everything including the football god was against me. His goals have been very lucky and I wasn’t able to use my chances, and so who doesn’t use his chances and makes his goals will get those goals in. So I needed to keep fighting out of the Lower bracket.
Going to loser bracket was an easy way for you to prove your skills. First was Matt from France, AlexBrando from Italy, mirodeniro from Switzerland and the last, but not the least, your team mate, Daniel ‘Hero” Schellhase. Explain what happened in each match that you played in the loser bracket, until the 3rd place decider against ‘Walkman'.
After I lost unlucky against Alexx and needed to move to the lower bracket, I took this as a new chance and wanted to use it this time.
The first opponent was Matt from France. In that match I was more the favourite to win and won easily with 4:1 and 1:0.
The next station was Alex Brando from Italy. This match actually was broad casted live from the stage, in front of the huge crowd. This just motivated me that much, that I never really let my opponent get back into the game and showed the crowd a nice match I hope. I won this one with 4:1 and 2:1.
Afterwards, I meet my good friend from Switzerland mirodeniro. This match really wasn’t anything for weak nerves. In the first match, he managed to make the score tie in the 90. and 105. minute. So we needed to make a penalty shootout, which I won 7:6 in the end. In the second match I scored twice in the early stage of the match and just 10 game minutes later it was tied again, but I was fighting and managed to win that match 4:3 in the end.
The next match against my teammate and friend Daniel ‘hero’ Schellhase was the hardest match of the tournament actually. I knew if I would lose this match I wouldn’t reach my aim again and become fourth like in Seattle.
From the beginning I tried to make my match and most importantly to defend as good as possible. By playing quite good I managed to go out of this match with a deserved 3:1 win. The second match should have been a clearly win for hero, as he was playing much better and had the better chances. But the football god seems to have an eye on me and so I won this match as well 3:2, but I could have been 3:4.
Then I had to face Walkman from Ukraine on the way to the final. I started quite good at the first match but in the end it didn’t work out as Walkman made the 2:3 in the 119. minute and so the first match was his. In the second match I was fighting, since I don’t wanted to go home already and managed to win 3:2. Then we had the final match. In this match my strikers decided to not make any goals it seemed, since I played quite good, but unluckily he made 2 goals whereas normally in FIFA08 those goals are in maybe 1 out of 100 matches, like a shot into the pitch of the goal from about 20 meters. I also had 3 100% chances in the 90. minute but didn’t manage to score and lost 1:2. But I am quite happy with my medal, since I am the first one who got a medal between all players from Austria!

You’re still young and probably have an entire career in front of you. When will it be possible to see Mario Viska winning the World Cyber Games?
Yes that’s right, I am young and hungry :). I want to achieve more this year, since everything is possible in cologne, even gold.
Since the new version of FIFA, it is kind of weird or probably there are a lot of secrets for many of us, you are one of the guys who can make a difference. Talking as a pro-gamer, can you give us some advices or some tricks?
The new FIFA 08 is a quite good game, since you have many possibilities to score, so I can just recommend everyone to buy it, you will have a lot of fun! Generally it’s important to be 100% concentrated and have a good defence, this makes like 70% of what you need to win a match. Buy the game and play us :)!
The summer holiday is almost here. Where are we going to see Mario this summer? Do you have any plans already?
Since I was nowhere last year, I want to visit Thailand this year. I heard that is a great country, with some awesome people, and this summer, is my next target for holidays.
SK Gaming is doing pretty well in the new EPS Season. Are you guys planning to finish in the first place again and win the EPS Finals? Or is this the year when SK will have some real problems?
In my mind, we have the best team since we have 7 skilled players all on the same level and this will pay out at the end. We don’t have enough yet and so we want to get the fifth title in a row, we are surely on a good win with 3 wins out of 3 matches, so definitely you can count on us!
As a gamer, you probably have your favourite news writer, someone that makes you to read his every single article about a game. Who’s the lucky one and why?
Yes that’s right, there are 2 writers, which I really like and really like to read their articles. It's Carmac and hng (Martin Pauer from Gamers.at). It's just fun to see with what passion they are writing their articles and so I like to read them.
Well, in the end of this short interview I would like to ask you some fast questions with fast and simple answers.
