SK Gaming managed to take down the Ukrainian team Flipside Tactics, who defeated the legendary Swedish team Ninjas in Pyjamas to reach the playoffs, in the quarter-finals of the Cologne major championship.
The first map of the best of three series against Flipside was our long time favorite Mirage. The Brazilians began on the offensive side and secured the all important pistol round thanks to
Fernando 'fer' Alvarenga's three entry frags in bombsite B. SK Gaming won the first weapon round as well, as the team quickly managed to take the same bombsite again and force the Ukrainians to retreat and save in a four-on-four situation.
Yegor 'markeloff' Markelov's clever play scored the 5th round for his team, but shortly after Flipside were once again overwhelmed by SK.
Lincoln 'fnx' Lau continued to reign supreme and together with his teammates gathered all the last five remaining rounds of the first half.
The pistol round of the second half was also successfully claimed by SK Gaming's squad as we saw the Brazilian legend fnx take down four in a latter round in order to secure the lead. Flipside came back with an impressive economic round win later on, but despite markeloff's efforts, they lost the last four rounds and all together with them map one.
The second map of the series was the newest in the official competitive map pool assigned by Valve Corporation, yet familiar to all of us, Nuke. SK Gaming started on the preferred CT side, but lost the first three rounds of the half. We won the following gun round, but unfortunately suffered three round losses once more.
Epitácio 'TACO' de Melo Filho almost clutched a crucial economic round, but was denied by the Ukrainian team in the last moment. Nonetheless, the fan favorite
Gabriel 'FalleN' Toledo stepped in and this time clutched the round for SK Gaming in an insane one-on-two situation down below in bombsite B. The Brazilians won the last eight rounds in a row and ended the first half 9-6 in favor.
Luckily we managed to take the pistol round and the following two rounds, but once again the Ukrainian squad managed to turn the tide, credit to
Georgi 'WorldEdit' Yaskin's four frags with the big green gun. Several rounds later SK Gaming managed to secure map and match point, thanks to fer's incredible action during the 26th round, but Flipside were able to win the last round of the second half and force overtime.
Marcelo 'coldzera' David and fnx collected all the available three rounds during the first half of the overtime. In the second half of the OT, Flipside came back to take two rounds as Ts, but fell short and dropped the 36th round and together with it the entire quarter-final match.
Our team remains undefeated so far and will match against the Polish powerhouse Virtus.pro in the first round of the semi-finals tomorrow, 9th of July, at 15:00 CEST, inside the Lanxess arena in Cologne, Germany.
