The International has tentatively regained its title for maintaining the largest prize pool in electronic sports history, with the current figure exceeding two million dollars. The first and second iterations of this prestegious tournament maintained this record, with the prize pool both years matching at 1.6 million dollars. However, Riot Games sought to outdue Valve by having the League of Legends World Championship maintain a prize pool of two million dollars. Via the sales of interactive compendiums, however, The International 2013 is set to break Riot's record with a number that is not definite at this moment.
For every interactive compendium, priced at $9.99, twenty-five percent is added to the prize pool of The International. Therefore, with an initial prize pool of 1.6 millon dollars, upwards of four hundred thousand dollars have been added to date. For every new goal reached, special prizes are given to those who have purchased compendiums, including item sets and mounts. The final, steep threshold targeted by Valve is to have a total prize pool of 3.2 million dollars.
The International 2013 will take place from August 7th to August 11th at Benaroya Hall in Seattle, Washington. SK Gaming will be on-site to provide coverage of the event.
